This page will carry prices observed each month in Gaborone for the five product lines: live broilers by the bird, dressed chicken per kg, frozen whole chicken per kg, eggs per tray of thirty, and day-old chicks per chick. Each observation will be dated and will name the type of outlet (supermarket, butchery, farm gate, hatchery) without naming the seller.
First observations are being collected. Until they are published, no price figures appear here, and chicken.co.bw’s own prices are confirmed on enquiry.
What moves chicken prices in Botswana
- Feed cost. Feed is the biggest cost of producing a chicken, and Botswana’s feed is expensive by regional standards.
- Chick supply. Seasonal shortages of day-old chicks around Easter and year end raise the cost of birds and can trigger import permits.
- Import controls. With imports restricted, local prices are not disciplined by cheaper regional chicken.
- Bird flu in South Africa. Bans on South African imports tighten regional supply.
- Fuel and transport. Distance from Gaborone adds to delivered prices elsewhere in the country.
- Inflation. General food inflation feeds into feed, packaging and transport.
How to read prices
Live bird prices depend on weight; ask the weight before comparing. Dressed and frozen prices are per kg, and frozen chicken may be brined, which adds water weight. Egg prices vary by size and grade. Chick prices vary by breed and by whether vaccination is included.
