What they are
Hy-Line Brown and Lohmann Brown are hybrid laying hens bred by Hy-Line International and Lohmann Breeders respectively. Both are selected for high egg numbers, brown shells, feed efficiency and calm temperament. They are the standard layers in commercial egg production across southern Africa.
Laying performance
Both hybrids come into lay at roughly eighteen to twenty weeks of age and lay close to one egg a day at peak. A well-managed hen lays around three hundred eggs in her first laying year, after which output declines and commercial flocks are replaced. Eggs are laid mostly in the morning.
Point of lay
Pullets are often sold at point of lay, meaning around sixteen to twenty weeks old and about to start laying. Buying at point of lay avoids the cost and risk of rearing chicks for four months, but the birds cost more. Buying day-old layer chicks is cheaper per bird but needs brooding and a rearing ration before the layer ration begins.
Feed and housing
Layers need a balanced layer ration with enough calcium for shell strength, constant clean water, and at least fourteen hours of light a day to sustain lay. In Botswana’s heat, shade and ventilation protect egg size and shell quality. See the housing and feed guides.
