What it is
The Cobb 500 is a commercial broiler line developed by Cobb-Vantress. Like the Ross 308, it is bred for fast growth, good feed conversion and high meat yield, and it is one of the two broiler lines that dominate southern African production.

For a small or medium Botswana producer the practical difference is small. Both reach market weight in five to six weeks under good management, both need the same brooding care, feed programme and vaccinations. The realistic deciding factor is which line your hatchery supplies consistently. Consistency of chick quality and delivery matters more than the line.
